Jim Van Nostrand is the Web Editor for McClatchy's Washington Bureau. He previously was the senior editor, national news at Knight Ridder Digital, where he managed nation, world and politics coverage on 28 Knight Ridder Web sites across the country.

He managed Knight Ridder's online coverage of the Iraq war, the 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 Olympics, and the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns. A former newspaper reporter and editor, he has been involved in Internet journalism since 1995, when he launched Leadernet, the online venture of the Times Leader newspaper in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

He was part of a team that managed the Biloxi Sun Herald newspaper's online coverage of Hurricane Katrina at SunHerald.com. The Sun Herald won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its print and online coverage of that disaster.

He was the supervising editor for "Echo Company," a multimedia reporting project that won a 2005 NAA Digital Edge award. The project showed readers the human side of 11 Marines and one Navy corpsman killed in an ambush in Iraq.

He has been involved in two projects that won McClatchy President's Awards: Inside Iraq, a blog that he launched in early 2007, and Beyond the Law, an extensive international examination of abuses at U.S. detention camps in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Van Nostrand is a former infantry captain in the U.S. Army. He served in the First Infantry Division in Germany and in the National Guard in Oregon and Pennsylvania.

He is an avid historian and an active member of the Online News Association.
